This lectures explains the fundamental principles of gas turbines cycles. Open and closed cycles are discussed and evaluated in comparison to other relevant thermomechanical engines.

In the following, energetic and exergetic process calculations are conducted in order to quantify improvments such as air preheating, intercooling and reheat.

Combined cycles, utilizing the exhaust heat of a gas turbine to drive a steam cycle, are also discussed. Component mappings are presented to explain the operational and control characteristics of modern gas turbines.

Furtheron, challenges of long-term gas turbine operation are adressed such as corrosion at highyl loaded engine parts and cooling of hot parts. Different combustion chamber types and their applications in gas turbines are discussed as well.
