The course starts with an introduction on the economical and technical relevance of steam turbines. In the following, steam cycles are discussed and evaluated by energetic and exergetic analysis. Process improvements like super-heating and pre-warming are presented.
Special focus is then given to turbine stages. Stage efficiency and stage characteristic numbers are defined for both, axial and radial design.
One-dimensional approaches for the technical design of the machine are presented. Three-dimensional flow phenomena are regarded at the low pressure turbine stages, incorporating stage losses.
Finally, construction and manufacturing of steam turbines are explained as well as turbine control and off-design performance.
