Centrifugal Compressor Test Rig "Limmat"

The centrifugal compressor component test rig Limmat is used for the experimental investigation of centrifugal compressor components (e.g. vanes, impellers, diffusers, ...). Typical impeller outer diameters are 280 mm. The impeller is driven by a planetary gear and a 660 kW DC motor coupled to it. A schematic section through the Limmat test rig as well as important measurement planes for temperature and pressure measurement and a probe measurement system utilized in the test rig are shown in the figure.

The test rig has an open gas circuit. The compressor air is sucked in the test facility and compressed against a precisely adjustable throttle downstream of the volute. Stages with a pressure ratio of up to 3.5 can be investigated at impeller speeds of up to 34589 1/min.

Applications

  • experimental investigation of centrifugal compressor components (e.g. vanes, impellers, stator, diffusers, etc.)
  • improvement and validation of numerical predictions
  • Investigation of flow phenomena and their influences (e.g. by geometric contouring of the channel walls) in centrifugal compressors
