During the 54th Power Plant Colloquium in Dresden (October 18-19, 2022), the Boie Prize for the best young scientist from the field of power plant engineering was awarded to Nils Petersen.

For 54 years, the Technical University of Dresden has been organizing the Power Plant Colloquium. The annual scientific-technical conference with integrated company exhibition attracted about 1000 participants to the Congress Center at the Elbe River. Over two days, speakers from science and industry gave technical presentations on current and future topics in the energy sector. Based on last year's contributions, the colloquium's advisory board selected the best young scientist.

This year, Nils Petersen was awarded the Boie Prize for a scientific study on "Using transcritical CO2 processes for heat pumps and electro-thermal energy storage". As a research associate at the IKDG, Mr. Petersen is involved in the analysis of high-temperature heat pumps and energy storage systems. In the study it was shown that the use of large-scale heat pumps based on transcritical CO2 processes represent an efficient way to provide high-temperature heat to supply district heating networks. A local sewage treatment plant was investigated as a waste heat source, which can reliably provide heat in the future.
