Final thesis at MAN ES in Zürich
CFD study of non-axisymmetric balance piston seal configurations
MAN Energy Solution (MAN-ES) is a leading Turbomachinery manufacturer. Products include complete marine propulsion systems, turbomachinery units for process industries and complete power plant solutions. At the Research & Development (R&D) center in Zurich, Swit-zerland, centrifugal compressors are developed, manufactured and tested. Component design fundamentally relies on CFD analysis and testing.
The 3D flow field through the non-axisymmetric gap between the rotor shaft and the casing in a balance piston seal, shall be simulated with 3D steady CFD. For various geometrical seal configurations, with accurate approximation of the ro-tordynamic movement of the shaft, the resulting rotordynamic coefficients and leakage rates shall be predicted and eventually validated with measurement data.
